'Be Not Afraid' (cd available for $20 +p&h)
was recorded live in Dunach, Central Victoria, September 2006 and mastered by Captain Vibe Studios.

The album consists of seven original compositions by Kristin Rule, covering a diverse range of styles from Classical, Jazz, Country, Chinese, Arabic, French and Indian.

1. Arc-en-ciel (rainbow) 3’46’’ - This Cello Duet composed shortly after the death of Kristin’s Father and was first performed at his funeral in 2002. The piece was inspired by the symbolism of the Rainbow, its meaning being ‘hope’.

2. Ivory 8’55’’ - ‘Ivory’ starts with a delicate soundscape that transports the listener to the orient. By using unconventional techniques the cello is made to sound at times like various Chinese instruments.

3. Jade 9’44’’ - The rich deep green sonority is ever present in this work as the viola (‘Little Axe’) weaves its way from quasi classical through to an almost bluegrass style.

4. Indigo 9’56’’ - The musical themes of ‘Indigo’ started their life many years earlier when Kristin was a composition student at the Victorian College of the Arts. The piece was inspired by an Indian style riff composed by Jethro Woodward, a fellow composition student, and together they created a song entitled ‘Cold Hands and Feet’. Kristin later rearranged the work for solo cello and loop station and renamed it ‘Indigo’.

5. Rust 10’04’’ - ‘Rust’ is a very powerful and emotive piece that expresses the perfection of imperfection. The viola plays a beautiful melody that contains contrast between a full rich tone and a harsh thin sound. The piece then evolves into a more upbeat light feel before returning to more rustic overtones.

6. Sepia 8’08’’ - Reflections of time gone by, European sonority, French twists. The five string cello (‘Pierre’) is used to create wonderfully haunting sounds. It seems to evoke an image of someone discovering a very old and dusty French Film in some deep dark cellar.

7. Be Not Afraid 11’34’’ - This is the story as told by the father to the young child (as pictured on the cd cover). “Be Not Afraid of the wind, my Friend” he says to her. The music was inspired by Iranian Sufi music and features the sounds of the viola. The only vocals on this cd occur in the last three minutes of this piece. They were written by Kristin Rule and sung by singer/songwriter Dave Wayman.
