'Free Performance in Schools'
This is a unique and limited opportunity and has proven to be very inspirational for String Music Students and Year 11 & 12 Music Students.
The performance/demonstration covers various 20th (& 21st) Century string techniques such as 2 & 3 finger pizzicato, use of plectrums, col legno, sul ponticello, playing behind the bridge, percussive sounds, unusual bow noises, glissandi, harmonics (natural and false) to name a few.
Music technology such as electronic effects and a looping pedal are also used to create original compositions with stylistic diversity (Arabic, Indian, French, Chinese, Jazz, Classical, etc).
Kristin plays a 5 string semi-acoustic (electric) cello and a 4 string semi-acoustic viola. Creativity and improvisation are important features of the performance.
FROM THE STUDENTS
“It was amazing the different sounds she got out of the cello”
"That was the goods. Intense."
“It was great. I was expecting it to be really weird and freaky, but it was really listenable”
FROM THE TEACHERS
"I wanted to write to you to acknowledge the wonderful performance you were able to provide to our students at St. Patrick’s College Strathfield. Looking around the room when you were performing your original compositions and demonstrating different performance techniques, you could see by the boys expressions how impressed and amazed they were with your skill and ability. It takes a unique and talented musician to hold the attention of boys from year 5 to year 11 for 45 minutes. You accomplished this task with great proficiency. Thank you."
Bernadette Bentley (Performing Arts Coordinator)
"Thanks Kristin for coming to Eden High. Both the students and I were really inspired by your workshop."
Robyn Martin (Music Coordinator)
