Kristin ‘Rule’, alias ‘The Unconventional Cellist’, graduated with a Bachelor Degree in Composition at the Victorian College of the Arts in 2000. Her final year of study was spent in Paris under the direction of Eugene Kurtz. She later studied composition under the prominent Australian Composer Larry Sitsky before deciding to develop her improvisational and creative skills on the cello.

Kristin commissioned Paul Davies of Arts Music in Castlemaine to make a 5 string semi-acoustic cello which she Christened ‘Pierre’ after her father Peter, who passed away in 2002 ending an intense battle with Leukaemia. The loss of her father had a very deep impact on the future direction of her music.

In 2004, Kristin decided to take up motorcycle riding, something she’d always wanted to do. She purchased a semi-acoustic viola to take with her on the bike and named him ‘Little Axe’.

Kristin’s career highlights include:

1997 Peers Coetmore Scholarship for Cellists

2000 Winner of the Quip Quip composition commission

2000 ‘Rain’ for solo cello performed at the Port Fairy Spring Music Festival and later broadcast on ABC FM

2005 Commissioned to compose work for Semi Acoustic String Quintet and Effects that was premiered by Ivanhoe Grammar at their 90 year anniversary concert at the Hamer Hall

2005 Demonstrated Arts Music instruments in Shanghai at Music China
